AGM
Monday 24 March 2003
The club's Annual General Meeting took place on Monday 24 March at East Hagbourne Village Hall. Toni Shelbourne gave a lively and fascinating presentation about Tellington Touch. Briefly, Tellington Touch was developed by Linda Tellington-Jones who has been closely supported in its development by her sister Robyn Hood. The non-habitual movements release tension using gentle bodywork and physically balancing groundwork exercises. TTouch creates the opportunity for animals and people to experience a different way to respond. Over time this can help them to learn how to shift from previously habitual behaviour patterns.
Olympia
December 2002
David (right) walks the course before running in the semi final on Saturday 21 December (followed by Shauna from Crazymaesy and Janet from UpAndOver). As usual at Olympia the course was designed to fit the arena which meant it was long and narrow. This resulted in the tricky obstacles forming the turns at each end posing more of a problem than expected as it was not so easy to be there to help the dog. David, being young and fit, was well able to 'be there' but unfortunately a tiny twitch pulled Billy away from the intended jump which scuppered his chances of reaching the evening final. We hope he'll be back next year - with WDTC company?
Jo Fraser's Training Day
December 2002
Pictured above are some of the victims participants at Jo's (3rd from left) training sessions. We all had a great time as Jo gradually built a handling sequence from a series of smaller patterns. Jo's approach was patient and entertaining and we all learned a great deal from her during our session. We are now looking forward to putting it all into practise at the shows this summer!
Successful Stay Day
September 2002
On 27 September a pack of members past and present participated in a sponsored stay for the `Make A Wish' Foundation. The charity helps terminally ill children to enjoy life by making their wishes come true. Children have been sent to Disneyland or to meet celebrities from pop, film and television.
The day proved to be a great success - testament to the hard work that Rosemary Tappin put into organizing the event and the influence she clearly has with global weather patterns as it was a beautiful, sunny day.
Participants began to gather around lunchtime in order to erect gazebos for the refreshments, the bring-and-buy cake stall and the tombola as well as setting up the agility training courses. Just days before Simon Peachey was due to compete at the world championships in Germany, he and Lorna had agreed to run some training classes for those taking part in the stays. Everyone appreciated the training - "thankyou very much Simon and Lorna for your valuable time and advice".
Having tired the dogs out (not to mention the handlers) with all that agility training it was soon time to attempt the stay - which as well as helping unfortunate children had been sanctioned by Guinness as a world record attempt for the most dogs to simultaneously do a 2-minute stay at twelve paces.
Rosemary had organised four respected club members to act as invigilators during the event. The dogs were set up to form four sides of a huge square with each side having its own invigilator. At the appointed hour, 4pm, everyone was instructed to leave their dogs and the clock was started. Forty two dogs made the attempt but unfortunately five of these had clearly not put enough effort into the agility training and were not too tired to investigate some very interesting scents, sights or sounds that they smelled, spotted or heard. None-the-less, thirty seven dogs were successful.
Just as we finished the press photographer arrived to capture the scene for prosperity! So we lay the dogs down en masse to pose for the photograph (above). Rosie took the eye of the photographer and ended up not only in the local newspaper but also on Oxford's Channel 6.
Afterwards the handlers queued to have their forms signed to ratify success in their attempt at the record.
It was an excellent day and we raised around £800 for the charity, all the cakes were sold and almost everyone won a prize on the tombola.
Well done and thankyou to everyone for their support in this worthy event, to Rosemary for organising it and to Simon and Lorna for the agility training.
